they were fucking great. my band used to jam with skip occasionally. he'd begun having difficulties, but was always a gentleman and could still wring the hell out of my friend's 335 & old tweed bassman.

My opinion:Arkady63 came down pretty hard on Moby Grape.I have all of their albums-vinyl,of course-and they are superb. That said,I suppose it's possible that,if you were young and stumbled upon this video or another of the Grape's,you might not like them. The sound quality is not good, and the Grape here do seem a bit off the beat and a bit off key at times(esp on 8:05).But this is probably the best that could be done in those days, esp with the lousy monitering systems.I say Grape is Great!

The Moby Grapes.....Douglas was such a dork. But I think it was hip to be square. I just watched one where he introduced "the banana fudge". Too funny

lofl MFRedeemerp2, thought i was the only one caught that. hollywood coast wasn't strangled by political correctness yet & cotton pickin' was a phrase common to middle class American vernacular. Sucks that it's derogatory toward Blacks, who picked most of the cotton. by late 60's it was so widely used i think most saying it weren't thinking in racial terms. it was handed down terminology that hopefully lost its original implication toward Blacks while retaining its general derogatory meaning.??

i read an article somewhere that said moby grape was the most well rehearsed band in rock history. i still have my old man's 2-album set "moby grape wow/grape jam." i listened to the "grape jam" bonus album over & over, with Mike Bloomfield guest appearing (though i think he plays keys - not guitar on it). listen 2 that if u wanna hear great raw guitar w/feeling & no studio overdubbing or effects. these guys were talented musicians.

What lovely bass playing by Bob on "8:05" -- wish Skip had gotten closer to his mike, but he sure is fun to watch.

This a fantastic performance. You just have to know how to listen. i.e. 2:02 to 2:28 Fantastic! Sound quality is for diletantes. This is low-fi perfection.

So I see you have an opinion about Moby Grape Mr. Arkady63. Tell me, have you ever heard their first album? It really rocks and blows most of the other album's from this period away. This here is what is known as a bad '60s T.V. performance and it's not the band's fault. These T.V. studios were not equipped to handle these new high voltage rock acts, that's why Zeppelin gave that up their first year together!

A bluegrass/jug band called the Warlocks heard their buds, MG, practicing a noodling song called "Dark Magic." (That MG would sometimes play for it for an entire set. ;) A short time later, the Warlocks became a noodling band with a new song called "Dark Star" and a new name, the Greatful Dead. In 1966/67, in SF, there was no question as to who/whom was best. -le prune
